What is barcode billing?
Barcode billing is adding items to a bill by scanning the product's barcode rather than typing or searching for it. The POS software matches the barcode to a product record, applies its price and tax, and reduces that product's stock when the bill is completed. Setting up barcode billing in a store
1. Decide which codes to use
Packaged FMCG, electronics, cosmetics and medicines usually carry a manufacturer barcode (EAN/UPC). Loose goods, own-brand items and apparel need your own codes, tied to your SKU scheme. SKU guide →
2. Choose hardware
A wired USB or Bluetooth scanner that behaves as keyboard input covers most counters. A small thermal label printer handles own labels. Confirm devices with sales before buying.
3. Enter barcodes on products
Add the barcode to each product or variant in the catalogue. Scan the label into the field to avoid typos.
4. Train for the exceptions
Damaged labels, loose items and products without a code are billed by search, so the queue keeps moving without breaking stock accuracy.

Can barcode scanning distinguish sizes and colours?
